Stains and Other Finishes

The internet is full of opinions and everyone is out to convince you to use a certain product. If you spend the time doing your research your chance of selecting a decent product outweighs what you will buy locally. If you walk into any local hardware or big box store, they are going to convince you to buy a product from them off the shelf. The guy behind the paint counter is not going to educate you. There are other products available that are superior to what these stores are selling. Our company is not out to sell product, we are out to sell the best service using the best products available. We have picked what we feel and have tested to be the best water-based stain and the best oil-based stain on the market and that is what we offer. Our hands are not tied to a specific stain manufacturer and we will give you our honest opinion on other products if you would like another specific stain.

What you can gain knowledge from is our references. Log Home Rescue will provide you with as many references as you would like so that you can talk to other log home owners and get their feedback on the products we used with them. At Log Home Rescue we stand behind the products we use. We are confident because of the time we take in the prep work and the restoration process we do prior to applying these products.

When it comes to choosing the right product, you will be concerned with what will give you the most protection or the appearance you desire. A penetrating stain is going to soak directly into the log and will not have sheen, while a film forming finish is going to provide a matte to gloss sheen. The products that we recommend are 2-3 coat systems and our preferred application method is all by the precision of brush. Our crews at Log Home Rescue always work with attention to details and check temperature and the woods moisture content prior to applying any stain.

When it comes to applying a finish to your home, we at Log Home Rescue work to meticulously brush on the product, we never use sprayers.

If you have gone through the process of restoring your logs and applying your desired finish, maintaining the finish will keep your logs protected and the appearance that you will be able to appreciate for many years. Log Home Rescue’s knowledgeable experts can beautify your home and apply a protective finish that protects your home.  The stain we use will help protect your home from harmful UV rays, disruptive insects, and damaging water penetration. It also keeps dirt and mildew from building up in the wood.

If you are buying a log home for the first time and the home you are looking at is painted or coated with a solid stain, hire the best home inspector that will be able to identify if there is any rot hidden behind the paint.  Often times homeowners will notice they have a problem where several logs are rotting and rather than replace those logs they will use cheap wood fillers and cover the areas up with paint so you never will notice as you walk around.  Temperature can also affect paint and moisture is created that can cause either the paint itself to push off and start to flake or the log to begin to decay. Paints are not ideal products to apply to the exterior of a log home and can be expensive to remove.
